Anchoring Basics: Set It Once, Sleep Easy

Dragging anchor is almost always a setup error, not bad luck. Learn to pick the right spot, run 5:1 and 7:1 scope math, power-set the hook, verify with transits and an anchor alarm, and retrieve it cleanly.

There are two kinds of nights at anchor. In one, you sleep like the boat is on a mooring, waking only to admire the stars through the hatch. In the other, you're up every forty minutes squinting at shore lights, trying to decide whether that house has moved. The difference between them is almost never luck. It's whether the anchor was chosen for the spot, given enough scope, set deliberately under power, and checked before you cracked the first drink. Anchoring is a sequence, and once you run the sequence the same way every time, dragging becomes something that happens to other people. Here's the whole routine, from picking the spot to getting the hook back without drama.

Good anchoring starts fifteen minutes before the anchor moves, with a slow lap of the anchorage and three questions.

How deep — now and at low tide? Read the chart and your depth sounder together. You want enough water at low tide to float comfortably (depth plus a safety margin), but not so much that you can't afford the scope. Every foot of depth costs you five to seven feet of rode, so the 30-foot hole is far more expensive than the 12-foot shelf beside it. In most cruising grounds, 8–15 feet at low water is the sweet spot. Remember to note the tide: anchoring in 10 feet two hours before a 4-foot tide bottoms out is really anchoring in 6.

How much swing room? Your boat will wander in a circle around the anchor with a radius of roughly your scope plus your boat length. At 7:1 scope in 10 feet of effective depth (more on that number below), that circle can be 200 feet across. Check that the circle clears other boats, the shore, rocks, and the shallows — and remember that boats on all-chain rode, boats on rope, and catamarans all swing differently when the wind shifts. Anchor among similar boats when you can, and never drop directly upwind of someone with less room than you'd want yourself.

What's the bottom? The chart's abbreviations tell you: S (sand), M (mud), Cl (clay), Grs (grass/weed), Rk (rock). Sand and firm mud are what your anchor wants — modern anchors bury beautifully in both. Grass and weed are treacherous because the anchor skates across the mat instead of digging; soft ooze lets go under load; rock either refuses your anchor or refuses to give it back. If the chart is vague, the water color and what your anchor brings up on the first attempt will educate you.

Also look at protection: pick a spot sheltered from the current wind and, more importantly, the forecast wind. An anchorage that's glassy in a southerly can be a washing machine when the front swings it northwest at 2 a.m.

Scope: The Math That Lets You Sleep

Scope is the ratio of rode paid out to the vertical distance from your bow roller to the seabed — and that vertical distance is depth at high tide plus your bow height, not just what the sounder says. A boat with 4 feet of freeboard anchoring in 10 feet with 2 feet of tide coming has an effective depth of 16 feet, and every calculation starts there.

Why scope matters: an anchor holds by being pulled horizontally along the bottom, so it can bury. Short scope pulls the shank upward and levers the anchor out — the single most common cause of dragging. More scope means a flatter pull, a deeper-buried anchor, and chain lying on the bottom acting as a shock absorber.

The working numbers:

  • 5:1 — the everyday minimum for a mixed chain-and-rope rode in settled conditions. Effective depth 16 feet? Pay out 80 feet.
  • 7:1 — the overnight standard, and the right call any time wind over about 15 knots is possible. Same spot: 112 feet.
  • More — in a real blow, let out everything that swing room allows. Scope is free; dragging at 3 a.m. is not.

All-chain rodes can get away with a bit less (5:1 overnight in fair weather) because the chain's weight keeps the pull flat, but chain's catenary straightens out in strong gusts, so don't bank on it when it's blowing. Mark your rode every 25 feet with paint or webbing tabs — "about that much" is how boats end up on the beach.

Setting the Hook Under Power

Dropping the anchor is not the same as setting it. Setting is deliberate, and it's done with the engine:

  1. Approach into the wind (or current, whichever is controlling how boats are lying), and stop the boat dead over your chosen spot.
  2. Lower — don't throw — the anchor to the bottom as the boat starts to drift back. Dumping the whole pile at once braids chain over the anchor and fouls the set.
  3. Pay out rode under light tension as you fall back, either drifting with the wind or with a whisper of idle reverse. You want the rode laid out in a straight line along the bottom, not a heap.
  4. At full scope, snub the rode on the bow cleat and let the boat stretch it straight. Feel the bow snap gently head-to-wind — that's the anchor starting to bite.
  5. Power-set: with the rode snubbed, back down at idle (say 800 rpm) for 15–20 seconds, then increase to roughly half throttle — around 1,500 rpm on a typical small diesel — and hold for a solid 30 seconds. Watch two fixed objects ashore that line up abeam. If they stay lined up while the engine pulls, the anchor is buried and holding a load far greater than most anchored nights will ever produce. If they slide apart, you're dragging: ease the throttle, let out more scope, and try again — or recover and re-drop, because an anchor that skips on grass or fouls a rock will not improve with optimism.
  6. Finish the job: on rope rode, protect against chafe at the bow roller; on chain, rig a snubber line to take the shock loads off the windlass. Are You Dragging? Transits and Anchor Alarms

Every skipper's nighttime question deserves a better answer than staring anxiously into the dark. Use two tools together.

Transits (ranges). Right after setting, find two fixed objects ashore that line up — a flagpole in front of a house, a rock in front of a tree — ideally on your beam. Note a second pair in a different direction if you can. As the boat swings normally, transits will open and close a little and then come back. If a transit opens steadily and keeps opening, you're moving. This costs nothing, works without electronics, and a glance settles the question in five seconds. A hand bearing on a landmark, or noting your swing relative to neighbors, backs it up.

Anchor alarm. Set your GPS or phone anchor alarm with the anchor's position (drop it as a waypoint when the anchor goes down, not from where you end up lying) and a radius slightly larger than your swing circle — scope plus boat length plus a margin. Too tight and it cries wolf all night with every wind shift; calibrated right, it's the watchman that never sleeps. Belt and suspenders: transits for daylight and quick checks, the alarm for 3 a.m.

And check once more before bed. Wind builds at night on summer coasts; if the forecast is sporty, more scope in daylight beats deploying it in your underwear later. The same wind-awareness that tells you when to reef under sail tells you when your anchorage is about to get interesting.

Lunch Hook vs. Overnight

Not every anchoring job needs the full ceremony, but you should always know which job you're doing.

A lunch hook is a short daytime stop with people awake and aboard: swimming, lunch, waiting for the tide or the bridge. Settled weather, 5:1 scope (some skippers accept a bit less with all chain), a firm power-set at low rpm, and — the part that actually makes it safe — someone keeping half an eye on the transits. The margin for error is wide because you'll notice a drag within a minute and the engine is a turn of the key away.

An overnight set assumes nobody is watching for eight hours and the wind may do something the forecast didn't mention. That means 7:1 scope, a full-throttle-ish power set held long enough to be sure, chafe gear or snubber rigged, anchor alarm set, transits memorized, and an honest look at what happens if the wind swings 180 degrees — will you still have swing room, protection, and depth? If the answer requires luck, move now, while it's easy. The habit worth building: anchor every time as if you might stay the night, because plans change and squalls don't consult you first.

Retrieval Without Drama

Weighing anchor politely is the mirror image of setting it, and the golden rule is: let the engine do the pulling, never your back and never the windlass alone.

  1. Motor slowly toward the anchor at idle while the bow crew takes in rode — hand signals agreed in advance, since the helm can't hear over the engine and shouting is how anchoring gets its reputation.
  2. When the rode is vertical ("up and down"), pause. Usually the anchor breaks free as the bow rides over it; snub the rode and let the boat's buoyancy do the work if it's being stubborn.
  3. If it's truly stuck, don't grind the windlass. Cleat the rode short and motor gently in a slow circle to change the pull direction, or power ahead a boat length to trip it out backward.
  4. Once it's off the bottom, rinse the mud off before it reaches the deck, seat the anchor in its roller, and secure it before you put the throttle down.

In crowded anchorages, know your exit before you lift: once the anchor is off the bottom you're a drifting boat until you have steerage. How much anchor rode should I let out?

Multiply your effective depth — water depth at high tide plus your bow height above the water — by your scope ratio. Use 5:1 for a settled-weather daytime stop and 7:1 for overnight or anything over about 15 knots. Example: 12 feet of water at high tide plus a 4-foot bow is 16 feet effective; overnight that's 112 feet of rode. When in doubt, let out more; scope is the cheapest holding power there is.

How do I know if my anchor is dragging at night?

Use two methods together. Set an anchor alarm on your GPS or phone, centered on where the anchor actually dropped, with a radius a bit larger than your swing circle. Back it up with transits: two fixed shore objects that line up from your bunk-time position. Normal swinging opens and closes a transit slightly and returns; steady, one-way movement means you're dragging. Check both before bed, and again if the wind wakes you.

What's the best bottom type for anchoring?

Sand and firm mud, in that order — modern anchors bury deep and hold hard in both. Clay is good once the anchor works in. Avoid grass and weed (the anchor skids across the mat), soft silty ooze (poor holding under load), and rock (either no set, or a set you can't retrieve). Do I really need to back down on the anchor?

Yes. An anchor that's merely dropped is resting on the bottom, not attached to it, and the first real gust performs the test you skipped — at night, downwind, near rocks. Backing down at around 1,500 rpm for 30 seconds while watching a transit proves the set while the stakes are low and the engine is already running. It's twenty seconds of diesel for eight hours of sleep.
