VHF Radio Basics for New Sailors

Your VHF is only useful if you know how to use it. Learn why radio beats cell phones offshore, channel 16 etiquette, the securite/pan-pan/mayday ladder, proper mayday format, DSC setup, and whether a handheld or fixed set fits your sailing.

The VHF radio is the most underused piece of safety gear on most recreational sailboats. New sailors treat it like furniture — it crackles away on channel 16 while every actual communication happens by cell phone. That works right up until the day it doesn't: three miles offshore with one bar of signal, or the moment you need every boat within twenty miles to hear you at once. Learning to use VHF properly takes about an hour, and it changes you from someone carrying a radio into someone who can actually call for help, warn other traffic, and talk to a bridge tender without freezing at the mic.   • Broadcast, not point-to-point. A distress call on channel 16 is heard by everyone monitoring, and commercial vessels are required to monitor it. Help self-selects by proximity.
  • Coverage where phones die. VHF is line-of-sight. A masthead antenna 50 feet up can reach 15–20 nautical miles to a coast station; even a handheld at deck level manages 3–5 miles. Cell coverage often quits within sight of land.
  • Direction finding. Coast Guard shore stations can often get a bearing on your transmission. Nobody can triangulate a dropped phone call.
  • It's how the water talks. Bridge tenders, lock operators, marinas, ships in a crossing situation — they're all on VHF, not on the phone.

In the US, no license is required to operate a recreational VHF domestically, and modern fixed sets transmit at up to 25 watts (handhelds typically 5–6 watts). Keep the radio on and monitoring channel 16 whenever you're underway. That habit alone makes you part of the safety net.

Channel 16: The Party Line With Rules

Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) is the international distress, safety, and calling channel. It has exactly two jobs: emergencies, and briefly hailing another station before moving off. It is not a chat channel, and misusing it steps on transmissions that may matter enormously to someone else.

The hailing pattern is simple. Call the station's name up to three times, identify yourself, and immediately propose a working channel:

"Harbor Point Marina, Harbor Point Marina, this is sailing vessel Meridian. Reply channel six-eight, over."

Then both of you switch to 68 and conduct your business there. Total time on 16: about ten seconds. In US waters, recreational working channels include 68, 69, 71, 72, and 78A; channel 9 serves as a secondary hailing channel, and channel 13 is bridge-to-bridge for navigation (it's how you talk to that tug whose intentions you can't read). A few etiquette rules cover almost everything:

  • Listen before transmitting — you can't hear while keyed up, and you may be stepping on traffic.
  • Press the push-to-talk button, pause a beat, then speak. Slowly. Release to listen.
  • Say "over" when you expect a reply, "out" when the exchange is finished. Never "over and out" — it's contradictory.
  • No profanity, no music, no radio checks, and no conversations on 16.

The Radio Check, Done Right

A radio check confirms your set actually transmits and receives — worth doing at the start of the season and before any longer passage. Don't do it on channel 16. Switch to a working channel and keep it short:

"Radio check, radio check, this is sailing vessel Meridian on channel six-eight. How do you copy? Over."

A responding boater will come back with something like "Loud and clear." Reply with your thanks and "out." In many US areas there are also automated radio-check services on working channels (often 24–28) that record your transmission and play it back — the most honest signal report you'll ever get, since you hear exactly what you sound like. Asking a marina on their working channel is another polite option.

Sécurité, Pan-Pan, Mayday: The Urgency Ladder

Marine radio has three formal urgency levels, and using the right one matters — it tells every listener instantly how to prioritize.

  • Sécurité (say "say-cure-ee-TAY"): safety of navigation or weather. A log adrift in the channel, a race fleet crossing the fairway, a squall line — announced on 16, details often passed on a working channel. This is also the prefix on Coast Guard broadcast warnings. If a sécurité gale warning catches you out, knowing how to reef when the wind builds is what turns the warning into a non-event.
  • Pan-Pan (say "pahn-pahn"): urgency. Something is wrong and you need assistance, but no one is in immediate danger of losing life or vessel. Engine dead and drifting toward a shipping lane, a crew injury that needs attention but isn't life-threatening, taking on water but keeping ahead of it. Spoken three times on channel 16: "Pan-pan, pan-pan, pan-pan, all stations..."
  • Mayday: grave and imminent danger to life or vessel — sinking, fire, crew overboard you cannot recover, a medical emergency. Nothing outranks it. All other traffic clears the channel.

The honest rule of thumb: if you're wondering whether it's a mayday, it's probably a pan-pan. And if it is a mayday, do not soften it out of embarrassment. Rescuers would far rather stand down a mayday that improved than start late on one that was underplayed.

The Proper Mayday Format

When it's real, the format keeps you coherent. High power (25W), channel 16, and speak slowly:

  1. "MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY."
  2. "This is sailing vessel Meridian, Meridian, Meridian." (Boat name three times, plus call sign if you have one.)
  3. "MAYDAY, Meridian."
  4. Position — the single most important line. Read latitude and longitude from your GPS, or give a bearing and distance from a known point: "Two miles southwest of Point Lookout."
  5. Nature of distress: "Taking on water and sinking."
  6. Assistance required: "Require immediate pumps and evacuation."
  7. Persons on board: "Four persons on board."
  8. Vessel description and other info: "Thirty-two-foot sloop, white hull, tan sails. Crew donning life jackets and preparing dinghy."
  9. "Over."

Then release the key and listen. If there's no acknowledgment, repeat. Print the mayday script and tape it next to the radio — under stress, nobody remembers formats, and it means any crew member can send a proper distress call if you're the emergency.

DSC: The Red Button Explained

Every fixed VHF sold in the last two decades has Digital Selective Calling — that red button under the spring-loaded cover. Pressed and held (typically 3–5 seconds), it transmits a digital distress burst on channel 70 containing your vessel's identity and, if the radio is GPS-connected, your exact position, repeating automatically until acknowledged. It's a mayday that keeps sending itself while you fight the fire.

DSC only works if you do two things at the dock, on a calm day:

  1. Get an MMSI. The free nine-digit Maritime Mobile Service Identity (in the US, via BoatUS, Sea Tow, or the FCC) ties the distress signal to your boat's description and your emergency contacts. Program it into the radio — most sets only allow limited attempts before requiring a reset, so type carefully.
  2. Connect the GPS. Wire the radio to your chartplotter or GPS via NMEA, or buy a set with GPS built in. A DSC alert without position is a shout without an address.

After pressing the button in a real emergency, follow up with a voice mayday on 16 if you can. The digital burst brings the cavalry; the voice call tells them what they're riding into.

Handheld vs. Fixed-Mount

This isn't actually an either/or question — the right answer for a cruising sailboat is both, because they fail differently.

Fixed-mount gives you 25 watts and a masthead antenna, which together mean 15–20+ mile range, plus wired GPS for DSC and no battery anxiety. Its weakness: it dies with the ship's battery, and it's bolted below or at the helm.

Handheld gives you 5–6 watts and a rubber-duck antenna at deck height — call it 3–5 miles boat-to-boat. But it's waterproof, it floats (buy one that does), it works when the electrical system doesn't, and it goes where you go: the dinghy, the cockpit during a single-handed docking, the ditch bag. Day-sailing a dinghy on a small lake? A handheld alone is reasonable. Anything bigger, going any distance: fixed set as primary, handheld as understudy.

Make It Muscle Memory

Radio competence is like tacking — awkward the first five times, automatic by the twentieth. Hail your marina instead of phoning. Do a radio check each season. Rehearse the mayday script aloud once with your crew (off the air, obviously) the same way you'd walk through tacking and jibing before the maneuver. The goal is that on the worst day you ever have on the water, the radio call is the easiest part of it.

Do I need a license to use a VHF radio on my sailboat?

In US waters, recreational boaters don't need an operator's license or station license for domestic voyages — you can legally transmit on a recreational vessel without paperwork. You will want a free MMSI number to activate DSC. If you plan to visit foreign ports, you'll need an FCC ship station license and restricted operator permit, and other countries have their own rules.

What channel should I actually monitor while sailing?

Channel 16, whenever you're underway. It's the international distress and calling channel, and monitoring it is both good seamanship and, for many vessels, an obligation. Most modern radios offer dual watch or scan so you can keep an ear on 16 while listening to a working channel or the Coast Guard's local broadcast channel at the same time.

What's the difference between pan-pan and mayday?

Mayday means grave and imminent danger to life or the vessel — sinking, fire, person overboard. Pan-pan means urgent trouble without immediate danger to life: engine failure near a shipping lane, a non-critical injury, water ingress you're managing. If the situation deteriorates, you can upgrade a pan-pan to a mayday. When genuinely unsure, err on the side of the higher call — rescuers prefer to be stood down.

Is a handheld VHF enough, or do I need a fixed radio?

Depends on where you sail. On a small lake or close inshore, a good floating handheld (3–5 mile range) is a reasonable primary. For coastal sailing, the fixed set's 25 watts and masthead antenna — 15–20+ miles of range plus wired-GPS DSC — should be primary, with the handheld as backup for the dinghy, the cockpit, and electrical-failure days.
